The HD elbow is a further development of our standard elbow system, retaining the original design features and further optimizing the proven properties. With the further development, the product portfolio has also been expanded in order to find the best possible solution quickly and easily intraoperatively with a variety of high-quality standard products.
The most striking innovation in the HD elbow system is the implacross® E PE bearing. implacross® E is a vitamin E-doped, cross-linked ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). While the cross-linking of the polyethylene increases the wear resistance, the addition of vitamin E promotes the long-term stability of the material by preventing embrittlement. implacross® E is therefore the ideal articulation partner for the axis and ulnar components of the HD elbow joint as a material for the PE bearings.
Two variants are available for the PE bearings. In addition to the fully-constrained (FC) option, the semi-constrained (SC) option can now also be selected intraoperatively. The SC PE bearing allows a medial and lateral deflection of 3.5° each. As a result, acting moments that are transferred from the forearm through the humeral component into the humeral stem are diverted into the soft tissue. This minimizes the risk of stem loosening. As with the standard elbow system, the FC PE bearing allows complete guidance of the joint without medial and lateral deflection.
While maintaining our MUTARS® philosophy, complete compatibility between humeral and ulnar components is ensured within the HD elbow system. This means that revision components can be combined with tumor components. This enables bone-sparing surgical planning, which allows intraoperative switching to the next larger implant component in the event of unexpected circumstances.
